NY Airports & NYC. What You Need to Know About NY Airports & NYC.......
- JFK - The largest of the 3 NY Airports, located in Queens County on the south shore of Long Island (LI) next to Jamaica Bay, is an International Airport. JFK can handle almost ANY size A/C, (B747, A380 etc.) with its 11,000 Ft + runways.
- LGA - Considered the Domestic NY City Airport due to its proximity to NYC (Manhattan). LGA is restricted as "Large and Heavy A/C" cannot operate on its 7000' runways. LGA is also located in Queens County on its north west shore where the LI Sound meets the East River.
- EWR - Newark Liberty Airport is actually in NJ, but is considered a NY Airport as it is just across the Hudson River from Manhattan.
- NYC -NYC consists of 5 Counties also called Boroughs. The Counties are: New York (Manhattan), Kings (Brooklyn), Queens, Bronx and Staten Island. The area has 3 main Islands: Manhattan Island, Staten Island & Long Island as well as several smaller Islands. Brooklyn and Queens are actually on the west end of Long Island (LI) Comprising 2 of the 4 counties on LI. The other 2 being Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
- About Transportation....... Three of the most important things ALL CrewRoom Tenants need to know are............
- 1 - You can get to/from almost anywhere in the NY area by public transit.
- 2 - Travel TIME is more important than distance here in NYC !
- 3 - Travel can be EXPENSIVE in NYC, even public transit can be expensive as it may involve multiple transfers or additional fares. There are some discounts and some free transfers, but if you get involved with crossing bridges and/or tunnels by Taxi, Uber, Lyft, Car Service or your own car between your housing, NY Airports and/or Newark, in NJ, some tolls will equate to a small mortgage payment! Therefore, IF possible, plan to live near the airport you will be flying into/out of the most. Plan to avoid housing locations that will nearly bankrupt you if you are on new hire pay and bring or get a car. Because of the island geography, going between counties or to NJ may involve bridges and/or tunnels, necessitating tolls or changes (transfers) of public transportation which might not be a free transfer, incurring yet another fare! In simple terms, you want to be close to 1 or between 2 of the 3 airports (this puts you in Queens County), where most of your flights will depart/arrive and free of bridges/tunnels/tolls. (Between JFK & LGA in Queens there are no bridges, tunnels or tolls). Being in the geographic middle of all 3 Airports (Brooklyn or Manhattan) generally will not be a good idea, as you will spend too much time in transit for almost every trip. Manhattan will require a bridge or tunnel to reach ANY airport & Brooklyn will involve too much traffic even w/o bridges/tunnels & both will require multiple transfers.
- Parking & Your Housing Choice........ Despite what you may have heard, Having a CAR in NYC IS feasible. However, where you live then is very important to your wallet! There are areas which have on-street parking with NO restrictions and other areas in which there are parking restrictions or time limits or on-street parking is available but impossible to find, due to the many cars. A parking garage is prohibitively expensive sometimes actually costing more than your room/apartment rent !! Parking fines can run hundreds of $$$, or your car towed !!
